Conference Interpretation

Conference interpretation enables smooth communication among participants in a meeting where different languages are spoken. Through interpretation, participants receive a translated version of the original speech, and in the case of simultaneous interpretation, this happens in real time.

Interpretation vs. Translation

Interpreters and translators are both communication professionals. The difference lies in the channel each one uses for their work.

An interpreter works with verbal communication: they are responsible for understanding what is expressed in the original language, capturing its meaning and nuances, and faithfully conveying it orally in another language.

On the other hand, a translator works with written communication: they perform the same task, but with written texts.

Modes of Interpretation

Simultaneous Interpretation

The interpreter translates the original speech in real time. It is the most dynamic and fluid type of interpretation, suitable for most events, and technically the most complex.

Consecutive Interpretation

The interpreter translates the original message after the speaker has finished delivering it.

Booths, Large Team, and Relay

Simultaneous interpreters in a booth can work with either the «Large Team» or «Relay» system.

«Large Team» System

With the Large Team system, interpreters work exclusively into one language. This means they translate from one language into another, but not vice versa.

For example, in a conference with three languages (Spanish, Italian, and French), there would be three booths, one for each language.

«Relay System»

In the case of mixed booths or booths for «both-ways» interpretation, interpreters work from and into two languages.

For example, in the previous scenario with Spanish, Italian, and French, only two booths would be needed: one booth for interpreting into French and Spanish, and another for interpreting into Italian and Spanish.

The «Relay or both-ways» system:

  • Ensures excellent quality of interpretation for the client, as professionals are fully immersed in the congress theme without the risk of losing any information.
  • Allows for cost reduction by providing the same service with fewer interpreters.
  • Requires a deep mastery of the working languages by the interpreter, both in comprehension and expression.
